A Walk With You That Never Happened

This beautiful fall morning, after a long walk, a coffee, and breakfast at a cozy café following my appointment, I found myself thinking of you. As I walked home, I realized just how much I miss you.

I imagined you were here with me this morning, walking alongside me.

I know I would have worried about bringing you out in the cold. I would have kept asking if you were hungry, if you were okay, if it was too cold for you, or if the walk was getting too long.

And I know exactly how you would have responded: “Oh, I’m okay se.”

Then Aye would have scolded me, asking why I had to expose you to the cold and make you do all that waka, especially with us taking the bus.

I imagined asking if you wanted hot chocolate or if you would try one of my usual choices. With that mischievous grin of yours, you would have insisted on having whatever I was having.

You would have been happy, calm, and content, simply walking with me, discovering new places. Then we would have made our way back home to Mummy and spent the rest of the day telling her how much she missed by not coming along with us.

And then, of course, I imagined us gossiping about her, especially about visitors. You would have said something like, “If it were up to me, they don’t need to come.” I would have tried to defend her and them, and probably asked, “But what if it were your friend?” At that point, you would have gone quiet.

I smiled thinking about all of it.

I miss you. So, so much.
